On January 23, 1973, the US Ambassador to Haiti Clinton Knox and Consul General Ward Christensen were kidnapped by three young Haitians and held hostage at their residence in Port-au-Prince. For their safe return, the kidnappers negotiated the release of 12 political prisoners, a $70000 ransom, and safe passage to Mexico. The deal was negotiated by the French ambassador. During the kidnapping, the press was able to transmit the news without censorship for the first time since 1957.
