Radio Haiti in New York broadcast. Following Speaker of the House Thomas “Tip” O’Neill’s blocking of the Simpson-Mazzoli immigration reform bill, the Haitian community is disappointed that the amnesty they were waiting for will not be realized. Arioste Denis of the United Haitian Association discusses the issue, declaring that amnesty for undocumented immigrants has become a political game, and President Reagan is pretending to care about the rights of immigrants. Denis addresses misunderstandings about immigration in the Haitian community — he says that not everyone needs a lawyer, and some people are trying to make money off Haitian immigrants. He discusses the role of community centers in helping asylum seekers. Listeners call in with questions about immigration, including the US’s proposed plan to resettle Haitian refugees in Belize. Includes some community announcements.
