  • Dominican historian Roberto Cassá and Haiti's ambassador to the Dominican Republic, Guy Alexandre, discuss Haitian-Dominican relations. According to Cassá, virulent antihaitianismo does not exist in Dominican society; most Dominicans have friendly feelings toward Haitians, even if they possess some prejudices or stereotypes. Haitian people do, however, occupy some of the lowest rungs in Dominican society -- worse living conditions, lower pay, doing jobs that Dominicans will not do -- and even among Haitians, there is internal division (for example, newly-arrived Haitian cane-cutters or "Congos" are treated poorly by Haitian taskmasters). The question of migration, according to Cassá, is a social justice question, rather than a question of anti-Haitian sentiment, and will begin to be resolved if there is more economic development in Haiti. Jean Dominique asks about anti-black racism in the Dominican Republic, and whether racism played a role in Joaquín Balaguer's and Juan Bosch's alliance against José Francisco Peña Gómez -- the dark-skinned candidate of Haitian descent. Cassá says these were political calculations, and had nothing to do with the color of Peña Gómez's skin. They discuss the legacy of Trujillismo in Dominican society and politics. Some Dominicans, particularly older people, have nostalgia for the Trujillo era, because there was "order" and the poor had enough to eat. How, Dominique asks, are they creating a just society in the wake of Trujillismo and Balaguerismo?

Ils parlent de l'héritage du « Trujillismo » dans la société et la politique dominicaine – certaines personnes, notamment les seniors, ont de la nostalgie vis-à-vis de l'ère Trujillo, parce qu'il y avait de l' « ordre » et que les pauvres avaient assez à manger.
