Interview with Xie Hui, Zhang Laai, and Duan Guangyan

Xie Hui (b.1937) is a resident of Jiujia Village, Guowang Town, Fengxiang County, Baoji City, Shaanxi Province. In this interview, Xie recalls experiences during the Great Leap Forward and the Great Famine. At that time he was still in school and went washing iron sands, and studied while doing labor. In order to aid the disaster areas in Northern Shaanxi, the original 45 jin of grains became 35, and later people went in turns to open up wasteland for farming to save food.

谢辉1937年出生，是陕西省宝鸡市凤翔县虢王镇九家庄的村民。在这段口述中，谢老人回忆了大跃进和大饥荒时期的经历。当时还在上学就去淘铁砂子，边学习边劳动。为了支援陕北灾区，原本45斤粮食变成35斤，后来还轮流去开荒种地，节约用粮。

Zhang La’ai (b.1943) is a resident of Jiujia Village, Guowang Town, Fengxiang County, Baoji City, Shaanxi Province. In this interview, Zhang recalls experiences during the Great Famine and Cultural Revolution, especially the shortage of food and the busy life of “asking for instructions in the morning and reporting in the evening”.

张拉爱1943年出生，是陕西省宝鸡市凤翔县虢王镇九家庄的村民。 在这段口述中，张老人回忆了大饥荒和文化大革命时期的经历，尤其是食物的短缺和“早请示晚汇报”的忙碌生活。

Duan Guangyan (b.1938) is a resident of Jiujia Village, Guowang Town, Fengxiang County, Baoji City, Shaanxi Province. In this interview, Duan remembers life in the past. In 1960 he finished middle school, and the canteen was not bad to the students, but there was not much to eat at home. He still persisted to finish high school. He started working in 1963 and became a middle school teacher. In 1966 during the Cultural Revolution, he took the students to Beijing to see Chairman Mao. Later the school was revoked and he went logging for several years before getting back to teaching.

段广彦1938年出生，是陕西省宝鸡市凤翔县虢王镇九家庄的村民。在这段口述中，段老人回忆了以往的生活。1960年他上完初中，食堂对学生还算照顾，但在家里就没什么吃的，他仍然坚持上完了高中。他1963年参加工作，在中学当民办教师。1966年文化大革命时带学生们去北京见毛主席。之后学校被撤销，他就去伐木，过了几年才回到教育行业。
