Collection contains correspondence from Alfred Kelly and Williamson Kelly's mercantile accounts and receipts pertaining mainly to the Civil War era in Virginia. Subjects in correspondence include Confederate Army supplies, the Battle of Antietam, the 21st Regiment, Virginia Infantry Volunteers, and the Shenandoah Valley campaign. Persons represented include Ambrose Powell Hill, Thomas Jonathan "Stonewall" Jackson, Robert E. Lee, and George Gordon Meade. Also contains a receipt from George Worke (sp?) for the purchase of an unnamed female slave from S. Butler for 700 dollars on 1865 Jan. 19.
Biographical sketch of creators: Williamson Kelly was a merchant, grocer, and slaveholder from Lawrenceville, Brunswick County, Va. His wife was Mary Kelly; their daughter, Fannie Kelly, attended St. Andrew's Church School in the 1870s. In 1850, the U.S. Census Slave Schedules recorded that Williamson Kelly enslaved 11 people, ages 7-23. His brother, Alfred Kelly, was a lieutenant in the 21st Regiment of Virginia Infantry volunteers during the American Civil War.
