- | So we go over to see Mr., | 0:00 |
to see Jawad at his prison camp. | 0:01
And we get there, we go to more checkpoints, | 0:06
more waiting, and visit was supposed to start at nine, | 0:10
and by now it's about 10:30. | 0:13
So I'm very frustrated. | 0:16
And we get in and they say, | 0:18
"There's a problem." | 0:22
I say, "Well, what's the problem?" | 0:23
"Mr. Jawad, he has to pee." | 0:26
I said, "Well, okay. | 0:29
"Well, let him pee then, and we'll wait." | 0:32
He said, "No, you don't understand. | 0:35
"He's already peed this morning." | 0:36
I said, "Yeah, I don't understand. | 0:39
"So what's the significance of that?" | 0:40
And he said, "Well, we have a two pee rule." | 0:42
I said, "What's a two pee rule?" | 0:45
He said, "Well, if you have to pee a second time | 0:47
"then the interview is canceled and it's over, | 0:50
"and the session is over." | 0:53
I said, "You gotta be kidding me. | 0:56
"I mean, you guys took me to the wrong, | 0:57
"you told me the wrong information. | 0:59
"I'm late. | 1:01 | |
"It's not his fault. | 1:02
"He's been sitting there." | 1:02
And it was ice cold in the prison. | 1:03
They keep the air conditioning very low. | 1:05
The detainees think it's to make them uncomfortable. | 1:09
The prison says it's to keep out the rats, | 1:11
or I don't know why, but it's always very, very cold | 1:14
in the prison itself, | 1:17
which is where this particular interview was being held, | 1:19
or was to be held. | 1:22 | |
So I said, "Well, okay, if, | 1:23
"just let me talk to him just for one second." | 1:26
So we walk in and I asked my interpreter | 1:28
to ask him if he really needs to go that badly, | 1:32
and we walk in and he's hopping back and forth on one foot, | 1:37
doing the pee pee dance, | 1:41
which is not easy when your legs are shackled together, | 1:44
but he clearly had to go. | 1:47
And as I learned later, he had kidney problems, | 1:48
and he had to, frequently had to urinate. | 1:51
And he says, 'cause it was a constant cold | 1:54
just made it very difficult for him. | 1:57
So he said, "Yeah, I really gotta go." | 2:01
I said, "Okay, well, I'm your new lawyer. | 2:05
"We'll come back and see you as soon as we can. | 2:07
"I'm very sorry about the delay." | 2:08
And so it was a horrible, horrible start | 2:10
to my attorney-client relationship building | 2:13
and how I envisioned in this great speech | 2:19
that I had prepared. | 2:21
But it was emblematic of the Guantanamo experience | 2:23
because there was always some snafu like that. | 2:27 |
