| - | When I was working with Human Rights Watch, | 0:03 |
| I was doing research on human rights violations | 0:05 | |
| in the aftermath of the suicide bombings that happened | 0:10 | |
| in Casa Blanca in, in, in May of 2002. | 0:15 | |
| There were serious crackdowns on, on Islamists, | 0:23 | |
| in particular. | 0:28 | |
| There were people who were rounded up secretly detained, | 0:29 | |
| tortured, and abused. | 0:32 | |
| And my research at Human Rights Watch | 0:34 | |
| specifically looked at how the Moroccan | 0:36 | |
| authorities reacted to the Casa Blanca bombing. | 0:38 | |
| And my purpose was to show how they fail to | 0:42 | |
| meet their international human rights obligations. | 0:46 | |
| And I remember when we concluded our investigation | 0:49 | |
| and had a meeting with the human rights minister, | 0:51 | |
| the Moroccan human rights minister, and we | 0:54 | |
| conveyed our, our concerns, one of the things that he | 0:56 | |
| reacted to us, he said, well, you are coming to me from, | 1:02 | |
| from The United States. | 1:06 | |
| You are an American based organization, | 1:07 | |
| Human Rights Watch. | 1:09 | |
| This, what we are doing here, it's part | 1:11 | |
| of what happened after 9/11. | 1:13 | |
| Just like Guantanamo, he said something like, | 1:16 | |
| it's all like one package. | 1:18 | |
| It's like the whole package is like, you know | 1:20 | |
| this is a whole game that we were part of it. | 1:22 | |
| So, and I remember that we had to later on, go back | 1:25 | |
| as Human Rights Watch researcher and collect | 1:31 | |
| all these responses from different government officials | 1:35 | |
| around the world that use Guantanamo as a way to | 1:38 | |
| justify their own abuses to, to use it as a way | 1:41 | |
| to advocate for ending one Guantanamo abuses, | 1:45 | |
| ending the regime of Guantanamo. | 1:48 | |
| Sure, look, Guantanamo really created a new dangerous | 1:49 | |
| reality that all other countries will now say | 1:54 | |
| this is a fair game, to violate human rights, | 1:58 | |
| because we have a national security crisis. | 2:01 |
