- | Things are so terrible in Guantanamo. | 0:19 |
The length of time men have had to endure being there | 0:25
is so appalling. | 0:29 | |
The desperation of the men in Guantanamo is so great | 0:32
that there has been now an ongoing hunger strike, | 0:37
which will lead to deaths. | 0:42
And yet, | 0:48 | |
with all of the history, | 0:50
what is this country doing? | 0:53
Nothing. | 0:56 | |
It claims, | 0:59 | |
it's taken steps. | 1:01 | |
But when we've | 1:04 | |
(throat clearing) | ||
talked to the highest level | 1:05
of American officials, | 1:08
(throat clearing) | 1:12
they've said, | 1:14 | |
"You know when the Brits want something, | 1:16
and you know when they're just going through the motions. | 1:21
And, | 1:26 | |
until very recently, | 1:29
all they've done | 1:31 | |
is at most go through the motions with Shakar." | 1:33
But, | 1:41 | |
at the same time, | 1:43 | |
with weasel words saying, | 1:47
"We deplore torture." | 1:49
We have made it clear to the Americans | 1:53
that we do not agree with the continuing of Guantanamo. | 1:56
But when we've asked, I've met the Foreign Secretary, | 2:02
I've met the Senior Foreign Office officials. | 2:06
I have asked, | 2:10 | |
"In one single encounter with the Americans, | 2:11
have you ever said to them that what's going on is torture?" | 2:16
And the answer is, | 2:22 | |
"No. We have never, ever confronted them with criminality." | 2:23
Have you ever said to them, | 2:30
"Arbitrary detention, indefinite detention without trial | 2:32
is entirely unlawful and can, | 2:39
after an extended period, constitute torture in itself?" | 2:43
Have you ever said that to them? | 2:47
Have you ever said to the Americans, | 2:48
"We want to say to you this is unlawful"? | 2:51
And they say, "No." | 2:55
They say, "In our view, what would work would be diplomacy, | 2:57
and what you're suggesting is counterproductive." | 3:03 |
