| - | There's two suicide incidences, | 0:00 |
| I think that took place while I was down there. | 0:02 | |
| I didn't necessarily see them | 0:04 | |
| while I was on the block when it happened | 0:05 | |
| but you hear it over the radio. | 0:07 | |
| You hear everybody respond, | 0:08 | |
| there wasn't a successful suicide | 0:10 | |
| nor do I ever think there will be a successful suicide. | 0:12 | |
| When I was there, we were walking | 0:15 | |
| up and down the block every five minutes. | 0:17 | |
| You know, there's always somebody | 0:19 | |
| within 10 to 30 feet of a cell, you know | 0:20 | |
| and other detainees obviously aren't going to stand | 0:24 | |
| by and let their brother and, you know, commit suicide. | 0:26 | |
| If they see somebody trying to commit suicide | 0:28 | |
| they're gonna start screaming and shouting | 0:30 | |
| and yelling as soon as they do, we're going to respond. | 0:31 | |
| So I don't think a suicide can take place in Guantanamo. | 0:34 | |
| I know it's happened. | 0:37 | |
| I don't think it can be a suicide. | 0:39 | |
| - | You're saying that the five suicides of the government | 0:41 |
| - | Claims to be suicides. | 0:45 |
| I do not believe it would be suicides. | 0:46 | |
| I simply just can't fathom the possibility | 0:48 | |
| of a suicide taking place. | 0:50 | |
| There's entirely too many individuals. | 0:52 | |
| There's entirely too much monitoring going on. | 0:53 | |
| There's too much hands-on viewing of detainees all the time. | 0:56 | |
| They don't have privacy, even when they're in the shower, | 1:02 | |
| they're still being watched. | 1:04 | |
| So how, how could a suicide take place | 1:06 | |
| - | Didn't they put something over the windows so that | 1:09 |
| the guard couldn't look in and give them enough time | 1:11 | |
| - | In a shower? | 1:14 |
| - | No, in their cell. | 1:16 |
| - | Negative, they would have nothing to put | 1:17 |
| over their window. | 1:18 | |
| The biggest object they would have would be their towel. | 1:20 | |
| And at that, we would probably yell | 1:23 | |
| at them for putting that over their window. | 1:24 | |
| If we didn't have a clear view of them, | 1:26 | |
| then that would be something we'd obviously | 1:28 | |
| have to eradicate immediately. | 1:30 | |
| - | And do guards walk by the cells very | 1:31 |
| frequently so that there's not enough time for. | 1:34 | |
| - | Diligent guards doing their job do | 1:36 |
| and that was a good population of the guards. | 1:39 | |
| Sadly, unfortunately, the same individuals who | 1:42 | |
| were causing a lot of the trouble with the, within | 1:44 | |
| my unit were the individuals who wouldn't be doing that. | 1:47 | |
| But there still enough of us that, you know | 1:50 | |
| we were just either there because it was our job | 1:52 | |
| or if that was the attitude that we felt about it | 1:54 | |
| that was the attitude we had. | 1:56 | |
| There was those that were there | 1:57 | |
| who wanted to be there, there were those that were there | 1:58 | |
| who wanted to learn, you know, there's a number | 2:00 | |
| of different reasons and feelings that we had. | 2:02 | |
| But nonetheless, there was plenty | 2:04 | |
| of us that were always walking up and down the block. | 2:05 | |
| Sometimes there'd be two | 2:08 | |
| or three guards walking up and down the block. | 2:10 | |
| So there's simply no way that that could happen. | 2:11 |
