| - | In the U.S. military, | 0:00 |
| U.S. government, military included, | 0:01 | |
| we only swear allegiance | 0:04 | |
| to the constitution of the United States. | 0:05 | |
| That's it. | 0:07 | |
| We don't swear allegiance to a king, queen, flag, nation. | 0:08 | |
| We don't, it's only the constitution | 0:12 | |
| and the principles in that constitution. | 0:13 | |
| And I would just say that the vast majority of people | 0:16 | |
| who were engaged in all of this Guantanamo stuff, | 0:23 | |
| even those who did things that maybe I disagree with, | 0:25 | |
| believed that they were doing precisely that. | 0:28 | |
| And it's really just a matter of degree. | 0:32 | |
| We all believe in the same thing, | 0:33 | |
| we're all trying to preserve | 0:35 | |
| the national security of the United States, | 0:36 | |
| and the constitution and the values and the principles. | 0:38 | |
| And then it boils down to a question | 0:40 | |
| of the balance between tilting too far | 0:42 | |
| towards the security side of it, if you will, | 0:46 | |
| versus, on the other side, | 0:50 | |
| maybe protecting certain values and principles, | 0:52 | |
| knowing that if you degrade them too much, | 0:56 | |
| that that creates more of a risk than not. | 0:59 | |
| And that's what we disagreed on. | 1:02 | |
| It wasn't really on the end state, | 1:04 | |
| it was on how to achieve the same common goal. | 1:06 | |
| And so I don't fault anybody at all | 1:10 | |
| for things that they did or didn't do | 1:15 | |
| that in retrospect, you know, I may disagree with. | 1:18 | |
| It was their view at the time, | 1:23 | |
| and, you know, mine was different, | 1:24 | |
| and, you know, doing certain things, | 1:26 | |
| either, you know, calling the ICRC, | 1:29 | |
| or, you know, pushing back on that memo, | 1:31 | |
| on the enhanced interrogation memo, | 1:35 | |
| you know, you just do it, | 1:39 | |
| and at the end of the day | 1:41 | |
| you gotta feel comfortable with it. | 1:43 | |
| You don't wanna just roll over | 1:45 | |
| and just do what you're being told, | 1:46 | |
| you have your own individual responsibility to, | 1:47 | |
| you know, I swore allegiance to the constitution, | 1:51 | |
| and when it gets to that point, you know, | 1:53 | |
| where you really feel, then that's what you do. | 1:55 |
