| - | The immediate reaction was, you know, the reality sunk in. | 0:01 |
| 20 years is a long time. | 0:10 | |
| But there, you know at least there was the hope that, | 0:20 | |
| if he had to serve the entire sentence, | 0:31 | |
| that he could have a life when he came out. | 0:35 | |
| And we also hope that over time that perhaps you know, | 0:44 | |
| the government and the public would | 0:51 | |
| pull back some and maybe review | 0:58 | |
| the situation and the circumstances | 1:03 | |
| and be more reasonable. | 1:05 | |
| And John's never asked for pardon. | 1:08 | |
| John's honest, honest, honest, honest to a fault, | 1:11 | |
| if you can be honest to fault. | 1:15 | |
| And he's never denied, you know, what he did. | 1:17 | |
| So he wasn't asking for a pardon, | 1:26 | |
| but he would ask for his sentence to be commuted. | 1:28 | |
| And, you know, up until this time it's been denied. | 1:30 | |
| But as time has gone on, and I don't see a lot | 1:38 | |
| of progress really in there's been some, | 1:42 | |
| but not enough in our assessment of those early years | 1:48 | |
| and particularly of that time, | 1:54 | |
| and especially in light of what continues | 2:02 | |
| to go on in Afghanistan and Pakistan, | 2:04 | |
| that my concern now is that, you know, | 2:12 | |
| what kind of life is he going to have | 2:21 | |
| when he comes out? Because, | 2:23 | |
| you know I don't know how safe he's going to be. | 2:31 | |
| I mean, you want your kids to be safe at any age, | 2:33 | |
| anybody you love. But they've, | 2:38 | |
| again they've created like this mythology about my son, | 2:59 | |
| You know as to who he is, what he's capable of, | 3:03 | |
| and I just, you know, | 3:09 | |
| I that's my fear, is that he will never be able | 3:13 | |
| to have a life here, where he can return to a community, | 3:16 | |
| whether it's California, or anywhere else, | 3:23 | |
| wherever they release him, | 3:26 | |
| that he would be able to find a job that people | 3:31 | |
| are gonna you know, welcome him. | 3:33 |
