| - | Because I was the only interpreter for Uighurs, | 0:01 |
| only translator for Uighurs, | 0:04 | |
| so I have the whole story, you know, | 0:06 | |
| like what the detainee said and what happened next. | 0:09 | |
| One thing really bothered me was | 0:13 | |
| they were only looking for certain words | 0:18 | |
| during the interrogation, | 0:22 | |
| and then they will take the detainee's words out of content, | 0:24 | |
| and put together a different version of the interrogation. | 0:30 | |
| Your interrogators just sit there and they say nothing, | 0:37 | |
| and then when he hears "Arab," | 0:40 | |
| when he hears "Taliban," | 0:41 | |
| he just jumps in and says, "Oh, was there Arabs?" | 0:43 | |
| And then he just quickly writes something down | 0:46 | |
| without knowing what the question was at the beginning | 0:48 | |
| and what was the end. | 0:50 | |
| And it's not accurate here. | 0:52 | |
| And then, next interrogator comes in with this record, | 0:54 | |
| they will ask questions like, | 0:58 | |
| "Oh, you were up on the Tora Bora with Arabs, | 1:00 | |
| "and talked to this Arab, what did he say to you?" | 1:04 | |
| And then detainee will say, "No. | 1:07 | |
| "I was not there with Arabs, | 1:09 | |
| "I never talked to any Arabs." | 1:11 | |
| And then he will look at me like, | 1:13 | |
| "You translated," you know, | 1:14 | |
| "Did you translate wrong? | 1:16 | |
| "I didn't say this." | 1:17 | |
| And then I will tell the interrogator, | 1:19 | |
| "Where did you get this, | 1:21 | |
| "because I was translating | 1:22 | |
| "and he never said something like this." | 1:24 | |
| And then he will say, "Here, | 1:27 | |
| "this is what the interrogator record says. | 1:28 | |
| "This is what the other interrogator wrote." | 1:30 | |
| When this kind of thing kept happening, | 1:33 | |
| what really bothered me was one time, | 1:36 | |
| one FBI agent slept through the interrogation. | 1:37 | |
| For 2 1/2 hours, he slept. | 1:40 | |
| When we were going over to the interrogation, | 1:42 | |
| he said that he did snorkeling, scuba diving all night, | 1:44 | |
| and he was really tired. | 1:48 | |
| And when we got there, | 1:49 | |
| we were in with two DOD interrogator and one FBI agent, | 1:50 | |
| and then the DOD interrogator was asking the questions. | 1:54 | |
| And then I heard like, sort of, | 1:57 | |
| not snoring, but, like, heavy breathing. | 1:59 | |
| And I looked, and he's sleeping there on the chair. | 2:02 | |
| And I looked at the DOD interrogator, | 2:05 | |
| I said, "He's sleeping." | 2:08 | |
| He says, "Leave him alone, let him sleep." | 2:09 | |
| 'Cause they didn't want him to ask questions, interrupt, | 2:11 | |
| so he just went on with his question. | 2:13 | |
| But I kept thinking, | 2:16 | |
| "Okay, so we are here for 2 1/2 hours. | 2:17 | |
| "He slept through for like, two hours, | 2:21 | |
| "what is he going to write in his report | 2:24 | |
| "from this interrogation?" | 2:26 | |
| Because he didn't hear anything. | 2:28 |
