because people asked the question or pointed out | 9:08 | |
that there wasn't anything worthwhile caring about. | 9:10 | |
Nowadays, in the 1980s, all the major problems | 9:13 | |
had been solved by the civil rights movement or whatever | 9:15 | |
and one of the things about student action week | 9:17 | |
was that we pointed out the, | 9:20 | |
I think the major problem we have nowadays, in 1988 | 9:21 | |
is there were too many things to worry about which makes it, | 9:24 | |
I was so frightening that you won't actually be able to | 9:26 | |
concentrate on anything. | 9:28 | |

- | There's a lot of folks who have this basic rap | 9:41 |
about students in college today, | 9:43 | |
is that you're pretty much caught up in yourselves | 9:45 | |
and your own lives and your own friends, | 9:48 | |
that you don't care about what's going on beyond that. | 9:51 | |
And I think that you all being here today | 9:53 | |
is a statement that that's not true. | 9:56 | |
- | And it's not true, it's told to us, over and over, | 9:57 |
that it doesn't matter, it doesn't make any difference. | 9:59 | |
It does make a difference, everything makes a difference. | 10:02 | |
- | The solutions aren't easily to come by, | 10:05 |
but they nearly always demand that each of us, | 10:08 | |
in his own way according to his or her own interests, | 10:12 | |
have something to say about them. | 10:14 | |
If we decide that George Bush, Michael Dukakis | 10:16 | |
and Jesse Jackson alone are going to solve these problems, | 10:19 | |
It'd never be solved, | 10:21 | |
but if we take it upon ourselves to do something about it, | 10:22 | |
then the solutions become a little clearer. | 10:26 | |

- | They just act on what you think you can do | 10:33 |
because you can, it's amazing. | 10:35 | |

Put yourself in that other person's position | 11:10 | |
before you make a judgment, before you assume anything, | 11:13 | |

and interaction between the two groups? | 11:22 | |
How do you think you can do anything about that? | 11:23 | |
- | Well, I don't think things like that can be forced. | 11:26 |
I think it has, it's only going to be quality interaction. | 11:28 | |
If it is, a natural thing | 11:31 | |
if it just happens in a friendships form, | 11:32 | |
I don't really think there's anything you can do to force | 11:34 | |
stuff like that. | 11:35 | |

because I feel like, as far as race relations are concerned, | 11:41 | |
a lot of it does come with individual relationships. | 11:44 | |
And those are a lot more difficult to foster | 11:48 | |
simply because you can't force people to be open-minded. | 11:50 | |
You can't force people to begin to understand people | 11:54 | |
that are different than they are. | 11:56 | |
- | And I think everyone wants to interrelate, | 11:57 |
but it's just some sort of barrier there. | 11:59 | |

Now, I've heard critics say employers have no business | 12:40 | |
looking for drug abuse in the workplace, | 12:42 | |
but when you pin the critics down, | 12:45 | |
too often they seem to be among that handful | 12:47 | |
who still believe that drug abuse is a victimless- | 12:49 | |

about the importance your administration places | 12:56 | |
on generating greater and more effective efforts | 12:58 | |
to prevent substance abuse wherever it occurs | 13:01 | |
