US senator Jesse Helms ordered the suspension of aid to Haiti after the Haitian government confiscated the largely US-owned Rice Corporation of Haiti. The Haitian authorities accused the Rice Corporation of customs fraud. Helms also pressured US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright to deny visas to several Haitian officials, including Minister of Justice Camille Leblanc, Minister of Finance Fred Joseph, and Police Chief Pierre Denizé. Camille Leblanc explains the situation. He says the US Consul is not putting pressure on him.
