Jean Dominique interviews Professor André-Marcel d'Ans about his book HAÏTI, PAYSAGE ET SOCIÉTÉ. This book addresses the relationship between the landscape of Haiti and the people who have inhabited and exploited it, from the days of the Taino, through the colonial era, into the present. Dominique has questions about d'Ans's bibliography, and why he did not cite Thomas Madiou or Beaubrun Ardouin. They discuss, in detail, the effects of Duvalierism. Dominique questions d'Ans's apparent admiration and even weakness for François Duvalier, and his characterization of Duvalier-era Haitian immigrants as mixed-race elites. Dominique counters that the so-called "satanization" of François Duvalier is far from a bourgeois phenomenon, describing the discourse of "marronage" and peasant farmers' resistance to Duvalierism and Macoutes at Bocozelle and at pilgrimage sites. Dominique also questions d'Ans's claims about Syrians in Haiti, and his claims that the marronage of enslaved people in Saint-Domingue is but "intellectual fabrication" (which would in turn cast into doubt the "coffee revolution" in the mountains).
