  • Assessment of the economic situation in Haiti in the year 1988 during the presidencies of Leslie Manigat, Henri Namphy, and Prosper Avril. It focuses in particular on how Manigat's fraudulent election in January 1988 and the coup d'état that toppled him affected the rising cost of living, state revenues (including taxes and tariffs), the issue of contraband goods from abroad undercutting domestic production, international aid and international trade (including US trade restrictions against Haiti, Canadian and French aid, and aid following Hurricane Gilbert), and Caritas's ending of their program to attempt to replace Creole pigs. Includes an extended report on contraband at the Miragoâne wharf.
