Selon Gaillard, les historiens n'étudient pas simplement le passé: ils représentent et recréent le passé. "La vraie histoire d'Haïti n'est pas encore écrite".

  • Roger Gaillard gives a lecture entitled "Histoire d'Haïti et Méthodologie d'Histoire Oral" ("The History of Haiti and Oral History Methodology") at the Histoire d'Haïti Vu Par les Peintres (Haitian History As Seen Through Painters) conference organized by the Société haïtienne d'histoire et de géographie. Gaillard discusses historiography in general, the nuances of the US occupation of Haiti and resistance to the occupation, and the importance of conducting oral history, especially in a country with a strong oral tradition. According to Gaillard, the historian does not merely study the past, the historian represents and recreates the past. "The true history of Haiti has not yet been written."
