Gaillard discusses historiography in general, the nuances of the US occupation of Haiti and resistance to the occupation, and the importance of conducting oral history, especially in a country with a strong oral tradition. According to Gaillard, the historian does not merely study the past, the historian represents and recreates the past. "The true history of Haiti has not yet been written."
