  • Economist Charles Clermont and chemist Patrick Elie discuss the closure of two sugar factories, HASCO in Port-au-Prince and Centrale Dessalines in Cayes. Includes the science and economics of sugar production, especially the role of seasonal credit. Sugar factory owners, they explain, have produced huge profits of six to eight million dollars per year because their monopoly allowed them to set sugar prices artificially high.
