Jean Dominique interviews Professor Rubén Silié Valdez, a Dominican scholar who is in Haiti attending a conference on the Atlantic slave trade. They discuss the history of the slave trade in the Dominican Republic, the differences in the practice of slavery between the French and Spanish sides of Saint-Domingue, and anti-Black racism in the Dominican Republic. Silié Valdez identifies as Black, though many Dominicans deny their African heritage and claim to be "Indian." Silié Valdez and Dominique also discuss current Dominican politics (including the legalization of the Dominican Communist Party and racism toward José Francisco Peña Gómez), the expulsion of Haitian cane-cutters from the Dominican Republic, possible cultural and scholarly exchanges between the two countries, and studies of Africanness by Dominican scholars.
