  • Jean Dominique and Roger Gaillard discuss (and debate) the definition of Haitian national culture and identity, or haïtianité, and the blending of cultures in Haiti. According to Gaillard, there is no such thing as "Haitian civilization," for Haiti is really two separate societies, two separate countries: that of the rural majority and that of the tiny urban minority. To be Haitian, he argues, is to remain faithful to one's African roots, and the Frenchified and Americanized petit bourgeoisie have rejected Africa. The elite are, in Gaillard's estimation, anti-Haitian. Dominique disagrees in part with Gaillard's assessment, arguing that there are Haitian cultural traditions that span all social classes, pointing in particular to Haitian music. They also discuss the social and cultural differences between Haiti and the French overseas departments Martinique and Guadeloupe, which are timid in the face of Europeans where Haitians are open and frank.
