Nan jounnen 2 janvye 1971 (Jounnen Zansèt yo), ki se yon jou ferye pou selebre siksè Revolisyon Ayisyen an, François Duvalier, malgre fisik li ap vin pi fèb epi malgre li paranoyak anpil, bay yon diskou pou lejitimize pouvwa li epi pou site tout akonplisman ki fèt depi li pran pouvwa (pami akonplisman sa yo, baraj idwoelektrik Pelig la). Aprè sa, li anonse ke l ap transfere pouvwa li bay pitit li Jean-Claude Duvalier, anba pretèks ke lap "remèt pouvwa a bay jenès la."
On January 2nd 1971 (Ancestors' Day), a national holiday celebrating the success of the Haitian Revolution, the increasingly frail and paranoid François Duvalier delivers a speech legitimizing his coming to power and chronicling his achievements since then (most notably the hydroelectric dam in Péligre). He then announces his transfer of political power to his son Jean-Claude Duvalier under the pretense of “giving power back to the youth.”
