  • (00:00:00) Continuation of Jean Dominique’s editorial, “Reagan and Latin America.” While Latin American leaders view President Jimmy Carter as the first US president to have a nuanced understanding of politics in the region, the GOP candidate for president has a black-and-white view based on Cold War dynamics. Reagan promotes a strategy of isolation for the Sandinistas in Nicaragua, and is hostile to leftist governments in general. (00:06:58) J.J. Dominique interviews Michel Soukar and school director William Romélus about the failure of the 1980 baccalaureate exam, and problems in Haiti’s educational system in general. (00:19:07) Konpè Filo reports on the devastation wrought by Hurricane Allen in the area of Les Cayes, particularly in Arniquet and Côtes-de-Fer. Peasant farmers have lost their homes and their crops, and they need seeds and tools to rebuild and replant, not simply a little bit of money and food aid. Michèle Montas interviews Father Rénald Clérismé, who is originally from Les Cayes, who describes the situation. Circa August 20, 1980.
