  • Radio Soleil broadcast from January 24, 1999, concerning the political opposition’s call for a general strike on January 22, in response to President Préval’s January 11 decision to allow parliamentary terms to expire. Includes the failure of the general strike (only wealthy businessmen truly participated in the strike), the role of the Court de Cassation in determining the constitutionality of Préval’s decision, and the announcement by OPs that they are going to take to the streets (includes audio of René Civil of JPP). Also includes discussion of the international community’s reaction, specifically the UN and the OAS, which have heard rumors that Préval is trying to create a dictatorship.
