Liliane Pierre-Paul and Sonny Bastien present the news. That morning, October 13, 1987, presidential candidate Yves Volel was assassinated by plainclothes police officers in front of the police station in Port-au-Prince, where he had gone seeking justice for prisoner Jean Raymond Louis. Political parties and civil society organizations, including the Komite Inite Demokratik (KID), Mouvement d'Union Republicaine (MUR), and the labor union CATH denounce Volel’s assassination. Includes audio of Volel’s last moments. Pierre-Paul and Bastien also read lists of candidates for various political offices around Haiti, including president, senate, and the chamber of deputies. Presidential candidates include Hubert de Ronceray, Lamartinière Honorat, Sylvio Claude, Thomas Désulmé, Alphonse Lahens, Leslie Manigat, Clovis Désinor, and others. (De Ronceray, Désulmé, Lahens, and Désinor are all former Duvalierists, despite article 291 of the constitution that bars Duvalierists from political office.) The CEP denounces threats to CEP members and the mounting climate of electoral violence.
