The US Congressional Black Caucus sent a delegation to Haiti to observe the elections, and Congressman Edolphus Towns has denounced the corrupt elections in Haiti. Human rights lawyer Mike Hooper describes how partisans of Sylvio Claude (including Duplex Jean-Baptiste, Frédéric Dénizé, Emmanuel Giles, Antoine Phanor, and Édouard Pierre) were arrested in Port-au-Prince. In Miami, gay activist Bob Kunst has called for a boycott of goods from Haiti, following the Duvalier government’s announcement that it intends to imprison homosexuals to stop the spread of AIDS. The Duvalier government welcomes this hostility, as it allows them to blame US racism toward Haiti for the spread of AIDS, rather than taking responsibility themselves. In an editorial in the Duvalierist newspaper Le Nouveau Monde, Ernest Bennett declares that he agrees with the “camoquin press” that the US is racist toward Haitians.
