Seven years after Roger Lafontant's attempted coup d'état of January 6, 1991, Jean Dominique describes that attempt as but a preview of what was to come. What Lafontant represented -- a threat to nascent democracy by Duvalierism, macoutism, and a "dictatorship of the streets" -- was realized in September 1991 with the Cédras coup d'état, which was achieved with an alliance of the army, Macoute elements, big industrialists and "members of high society" along with George Bush's CIA. Now, after Aristide's return in October 1994, such forces continue to threaten Lavalas and its famous "twa wòch dife" from within, with calls for so-called reconciliation.
