Jean Dominique draws an analogy, highlighting the parallels and differences between the August 1991 coup d’état attempt in the Soviet Union, and Roger Lafontant’s January 7, 1991 coup attempt in Haiti. He contextualizes the Lafontant coup attempt in a long history of Haitian resistance and insurrection, from Boukman at Bois Caïman, to the Caco rebellion, to peasant mobilizations in the late 1980s. Dominique argues that insurrectional tactics can be employed, as well, by enemies of social change – like the putschists of Haiti in 1991, who have, in Dominique’s words, committed an act of vengeance, seeking the destruction of Haitian society.
