(00:00:00) Editoryal Jean Dominique sou divizyon anndan mouvman demokratik Ayiti a (òganizasyon popilè, sendika, òganizasyon sosyete sivil) epi sou tout sa Radyo Ayiti ap fè pou l rete tèt frèt anfas anpil pwovokasyon, 1987-04-10 (00:08:57) 10 avril 1987, Charles Clermont ak Patrick Elie te pale nan Radyo Ayiti sou fèmti faktori sik Ayiti yo, pami yo Haitian-American Sugar Company (HASCO) a.
(00:00:00) Jean Dominique's editorial on divisions within Haiti's democratic movement (including grassroots groups, labor unions, and civil society organizations), and Radio Haiti's efforts to remain calm amid provocation, 1987-04-10 (00:08:57) On 10 April 1987, Charles Clermont and Patrick Elie spoke on Radio Haiti about the closure of Haitian factories, including the Haitian-American Sugar Company (HASCO). In that interview, they claimed that sugar companies had been setting sugar prices artificially high because they had a monopoly. After that interview, HASCO's director, José Bouchereau, wrote a communiqué in which he claimed that Clermont and Elie did not know what they were talking about, and criticized Radio Haiti for bias in broadcasting the interview with Clermont and Elie. But, as Dominique points out, Radio Haiti had broadcast many sides of the sugar story, including the voices of sugar factory workers and sugar planters (who feared that they would soon be unemployed), as well as the perspectives of Bouchereau and another company leader, Georges D. Rigaud. Dominique plays a clip of the interview with Bouchereau and Rigaud, in which they discuss problems with payroll, seasonal credit, and storage, and blame both the influx of contraband and lack of regulation by the Haitian state for the closure of the sugar factories. In other words, Radio Haiti's coverage of the issue was balanced, 1987-04-16
