Joseph Marcelin dekri masak Oboy/Basen Kayiman, kote lame te touye anpil peyizan, boule kay yo, epi piyaje jaden ak bèt.
Joseph Marcelin describes the April 1994 Borgne/Bassin Caïman massacre, in which the army slaughtered peasant farmers, burning their homes, pillaging their crops and their livestock. The army initiated the attack because the pro-Lavalas peasants, under the leadership of Marc Lamour, had mounted a resistance to the army, chefs de section, and powerful landowners and speculators. The army, in turn, claimed that the so-called guerrillas were threatening the army and spreading communism. In the months leading up to the massacre, the peasants of the area had organized coffee and cacao production cooperatives, which were an economic threat to landowners and speculators in the area, particularly the Bennett family.
