They discuss political divisions and infighting between political factions, particularly the problems of the Lavalas party. They analyze how the hope of the Haitian people for free and fair elections in 1987 and 1990 has been crushed -- people are now discouraged and cynical about elections. According to Elie, it is not merely a question of "insecurity" as the 1987 and 1990 elections were also fraught with violence; the problem is that Haitian democracy is now a "pèpè democracy" that foreign powers are trying to shove down Haiti's throat.
