  • Sociologist Michèle Oriol discusses her book, "Histoire et Dictionnaire de la Révolution et de l'Indépendance d'Haïti." In this book, Oriol attempts to situate the Haitian Revolution in the larger global context, including events in the Spanish side of Santo Domingo, the United States, France, and Guadeloupe, and describes how economic life and international commerce continued amid the war. Oriol also seeks to overcome some of the founding myths of the Haitian Revolution, and to depict the heroes as men.
