  • Sociologist Laënnec Hurbon discusses his book, LE BARBARE IMAGINAIRE, with J.J. Dominique and Monique Lafontant. He describes the way in which racist ideas of "barbarism" as imposed by Western intellectuals caused 19th-century Haitian intellectuals to dismiss aspects of their own national culture (such as labeling Vodou "sorcery"). According to Hurbon, the main question is not what is "real" and what is "imaginary." It is about analyzing the social and political context in which phenomena arise. The question is not whether zonbi are real, or whether they can be explained by science, but rather how the history of slavery and oppression give rise to the idea of the zonbi. Hurbon describes how the "popular imaginary" contributed to the overthrow of Duvalier on February 7, 1986.

  • Le sociologue Laënnec Hurbon présente son livre « Le barbare imaginaire » épaulé de J.J. Dominique et de Monique Lafontant. Il explique comment le concept raciste de « barbarisme » diffusé par les intellectuels occidentaux incita les penseurs haïtiens du 19ème siècle à rejeter certains aspects de leur culture (comme par exemple le vaudou qui fut catégorisé en temps que sorcellerie). Selon Hurbon, la vraie question n'est pas de savoir ce qui est « réél » ou ce qui est « imaginaire » mais d'analyser le contexte social et politique qui a fait naître le phénomène. Par exemple, peu importe de savoir si les « zonbi » existent réellement ou non et de leur chercher une explication scientifique, mais d'étudier comment l'esclavage et l'oppression ont donné naissance à ce mythe. Hurbon raconte comment « l'imaginaire populaire » a contribué au renversement de Duvalier le 7 février 1986.
