  • Economist Jean Claude Paulvin of ECOSOF discusses banking cooperatives, which represent an alternative to traditional banks for poor people but which also carry their own risks. In 2002, a crisis erupted when it was revealed that many of these cooperatives were pyramid schemes and many people lost the money they had invested. Paulvin cautions that it is important to differentiate between true cooperatives and fraudulent ones.
