- Description:

André Corten pale avèk Jean Dominique sou liv Corten ekri a, ki rele « L'État faible » , yon etid konparatif sou Ayiti ak Repiblik Dominiken an. Li eksplike kisa vle di yon "leta fèb" (paske leta fèb pa vle di se pa yon leta gwo ponyèt), epi li trase divèjans nan istwa de peyi sa yo, soti nan peryòd lakoloni, pase nan peryòd Jean-Pierre Boyer, rive nan rejim Rafael Trujillo, ki te kreye yon gwo fiksyon "envazyon ayisyen" pou ankouraje masak 1937 la. Corten mete aksan sou kesyon agrikilti ak kapital peyizan yo, ki te pèmèt Dominikani devlope yon "pwosperite aparan."
André Corten discusses with Jean Dominique his book L'ÉTAT FAIBLE, a comparative study of Haiti and the Dominican Republic. He explains what is meant by a "weak state" (clarifying that the term does not mean that the state is not repressive), and traces the diverging histories of Haiti and the Dominican Republic from the colonial era, through the period of Jean-Pierre Boyer, through Rafael Trujillo's rule and the powerful fiction of "Haitian invasion" that set the stage for the 1937 massacre. Corten pays particular attention to the question of agriculture and peasant income that allowed the Dominican Republic to develop a "seeming prosperity." Are the two countries doomed to be torn apart by nationalism and antihaitianismo? asks Jean Dominique.
