  • On the thirtieth anniversary of the Duvalier regime's 1969 repression of the Haitian left, historian Michel Hector discusses with Jean Dominique the history of the left and communism in Haiti, and the importance of national memory. Oral history is crucial to understanding the Haitian left because they experienced such a brief period of legality and, most of the time, had to work clandestinely. Hector and Dominique discuss the splintering of the Haitian left (beginning with the PSP's division with the PCH, and the emergence of many other smaller groups in the 1950s and 1960s) and attempts to unify the left, when the PEP and the PPLN joined to form the PUCH in 1968 to combat the Duvalier dictatorship. Hector and Dominique also discuss the definition of the Haitian right, and obstacles to unity between sectors on the left and the right who might have had the common goal of resisting Duvalier. They address the role of the "question de couleur" in the division between the PCH and the PSP. They discuss the text LA BOURGEOISIE NATIONALE by Alix Lamaute, a young militant who died at Cazale, and whether his conception of the national bourgeoisie is compatible with the manifesto of Jacques Stephen Alexis. Young people in the 1960s were thirsty for knowledge and had to seek it clandestinely; today, Haiti is burdened by the Duvalier regime's legacy of obscurantism. Hector and Dominique turn to more recent history: the 1986 democratic movement, linked with the liberation theology-oriented ti legliz movement, was a progressive movement, while the military junta that staged the coup d'état in 1991 was unequivocally right-wing.

  • À l’occasion du trentième anniversaire de la répression de 1969, contre la gauche haïtienne, par le régime Duvalier, l’historien Michel Hector discute avec Jean Dominique de l’histoire de la gauche et du mouvement communiste en Haïti, et sur l’importance de la mémoire nationale. L’histoire orale est essentielle pour comprendre la gauche haïtienne car, durant la plus grande partie de son existence, ce mouvement était illégal et devait travailler dans la clandestinité. Hector et Dominique évoquent la fragmentation de la gauche dès 1946, la scission du PSP et du PCH, la création d’autres partis politiques dans les années 1950 et 1960. En 1968, pour lutter contre la dictature de Duvalier, le PEP et le PPLN ont fusionné pour créer le PUCH. Ils discutent aussi sur la notion de « droite » haïtienne et sur les obstacles qui ont empêché une union de la droite et la gauche pour résister à Duvalier. Ils ont abordé le rôle de la « question de couleur » dans la division entre le PCH et le PSP. Ils parlent aussi du texte LA BOURGEOISIE NATIONALE d’Alix Lamaute, jeune militant mort à Cazale, et ils se demandent si l’analyse de Lamaute rejoint le manifeste de Jacques Stephen Alexis. Les jeunes avaient soif de connaissance dans les années 1960 mais ils devaient la chercher en secret; aujourd’hui, Haïti subit les conséquences de l’obscurantisme du régime Duvalier. Hector et Dominique se penchent sur des événements plus récents : le mouvement démocratique de 1986, ses liens avec les Ti Legliz prêchant la théologie de la libération (un mouvement progressiste), et d’autre part le régime militaire ayant réalisé le coup d’état de 1991 (un mouvement entièrement de droite).
