In late 1986, rice farmers from L'Estère held demonstrations blocking the road to prevent Miami rice from being transported from the port in Gonaïves to Port-au-Prince. This set off a violent conflict between the people of L'Estère and the contraband importers of Gonaïves (such as Jean Tatoune). The guests address the argument that contraband goods are simply free market forces in a liberal economy, complicity of the CNG in the importation of American rice, the threat that contraband to domestic production, and the need for justice (particularly for Jean Tatoune to be put on trial).
