  • Philosopher Marcel Gilbert discusses the historcial roots of Duvalierism and the origins of the kleptocratic state -- a state that has sold and exploited the labor of its people, and literally sold their bodies and their blood. Drawing on analyses including that of Michel-Rolph Trouillot, he discusses social class and power in Haiti, the 1956-1957 electoral contest between Daniel Fignolé and Louis Déjoie that brought François Duvalier to power, and the "question de couleur" and noirism. He calls for the question of the Haitian peasantry to be integrated into Haitian political power and class analysis. According to Gilbert, Haiti's democratization depends on the creation of a political project that includes the majority, particularly peasant farmers, and that encourages alliances between the peasantry, the bourgeois agro-industrial sector, and the middle class. Dominique asks why this is the model he follows; why not the Cuban or Congolese model instead?
