  • Jean Dominique interviews Boutros Boutros-Ghali, Secretary General of La Francophonie and former Secretary General of the United Nations. They discuss the political significance of francophonie -- which, according to Boutros-Ghali, is not a form of French neocolonialism but rather a way of encouraging cultural diversity and globalizing democracy, because there cannot be sustainable development without democracy. Dominique and Boutros-Ghali discuss Boutros-Ghali's time at the UN, including US opposition to his second term and other efforts by the US to force its own political priorities on the larger institution. Among other subjects, they also discuss the UN's role in helping restore constitutional order to Haiti, and analyze what might be necessary for Haiti to emerge from its current political and electoral crisis.
