  • Jean Dominique rencontre Charles Suffrard et Joël Gabrius, deux riziculteurs de l’Artibonite, pour parler du récent discours du président René Préval, déclarant caducs les mandats des députés et de plusieurs sénateurs, ce qui a provoqué une crise politique. D’après Suffrard et Gabrius, la réaction des parlementaires n’est pas justifiée, car le parlement a fait obstruction à Préval à plusieurs reprises, entre autres par le rejet de ses choix de premiers ministres, sans raisons valables. Cela ne veut pourtant pas dire que Préval veut devenir un dictateur. D’après Suffrard, il est plus que temps que les paysans haïtiens s’occupent de politique. N’importe quel politicien qui veut gagner les votes des paysans doit prioriser la réforme agraire et la protection de la production nationale. Suffrard lance un appel pour que le premier ministre Jacques Édouard Alexis considère les paysans haïtiens comme partie prenante de la société civile, tout comme l’Église, le secteur privé, etc…

  • Jean Dominique interviews Charles Suffrard and Joël Gabrius, two rice farmers from the Artibonite, about President René Préval's recent speech in which he declared the terms of the Chamber of Deputies and many senators null, setting off a political crisis. According to Suffrard and Gabrius, parliament's reaction to Préval's speech was not justified, as parliament has obstructed Préval repeatedly (rejecting his choice of Prime Minister on questionable grounds, etc.), and this does not mean that Préval is trying to become a dictator. According to Suffrard, it is now time for Haiti's peasant farmers to be considered an important political force. Any politician that wants to win the votes of Haiti's farmers must emphasize agrarian reform and protection of domestic production (citing both rice production and sugar cane production as examples). Suffrard calls upon Prime Minister Jacques Édouard Alexis to consider Haiti's farmers part of civil society, alongside the church, the private sector, and so on.
