Description:

  • Vertus Saint-Louis and Jean Dominique discuss how foreign powers played Toussaint Louverture and André Rigaud against one another: the US and England manipulated Toussaint, while France manipulated Rigaud, thus turning black affranchis and mixed-raced affranchis against one another so they could not recognize or combat external threats. At the time, the US and England were invested in making sure the Haitian Revolution did not spread to their own slaveholding territories. Saint-Louis and Dominique discuss these events in terms of the origins of social and political exclusion in Haiti, of saying who is an insider and who is an outsider -- and who is good and who is evil -- based on skin color. For Jean Dominique, the events of the late 18th century have direct parallels to the late 20th century Haitian context, wherein powerful entites (be they foreign powers and Haitian elites) argue over Haiti with no real regard for its well-being, like the baby in the story of the judgment of Solomon.
