  • On the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the Association Médicale Haïtienne, Dr. Claude Suréna discusses the history and politics of the association, including the ethics of medical doctors who commit abuses, doctors turned dictators and Macoutes. How, Jean Dominique asks, could François Duvalier have been a doctor who took the Hippocratic Oath? Dominique refers to other doctor-collaborators, such as Dr. Mengele in Nazi Germany. In addition to Duvalierist elements within the AMH, they also discuss the relationships between the AMH and Haitian doctors' associations in the diaspora, the problem of "brain drain," and scientific research.
