Three young men from Cité Soleil -- Jean Nerva Siméon, Richard Dupré, and André Pierre Milien -- describe life in their community. They describe the problems, including poverty, unemployment, lack of resources and infrastructure, and zenglendo and gangs like Lame Wouj. But they also speak of grassroots efforts (such as the work of KADEPA) to change Cité Soleil's image and provide the population with the things the state does not provide (water distribution, sanitation, utilities, and so on). They also discuss the difficult political situation in Cité Soleil, where political leaders manipulate the population to achieve their own goals. Likewise, international NGOs exploit Cité Soleil's misery in order to enrich themselves; therefore, they are invested in keeping the Cité poor and filthy to justify their continued presence. Meanwhile, victims of the 17 December 1993 incident in which FRAPH burned down homes in Cité Soleil have still not received housing. Gangs are a real problem, but not everyone in Cité Soleil are violent zenglendo, and the police use the gangs as an excuse to commit abuses, intimidate Aristide supporters, and feed inter-Lavalassian conflict. The people with guns who create insecurity in Cité Soleil are hungry and desperate, and they have powerful people behind them, providing them with those weapons.
Trois jeunes hommes de Cité Soleil, Jean Nerva Siméon, Richard Dupré, et André Pierre Milien, décrivent la vie dans leur communauté. Les problèmes confrontés: misère, chômage, insuffisance des ressources et des infrastructures, et enfin présence des zenglendos et des gangs, comme L’Armée Rouge. Mais ils parlent aussi des efforts faits localement (par exemple le travail de KADEPA) pour changer l’image de Cité Soleil et fournir à la population ce que l’état ne leur offre pas (distribution d’eau, sanitation, électricité, etc.). Ils expliquent la situation politique difficile dans la Cité, où des leaders politiques manipulent la population pour faire aboutir leurs propres agendas. Il y a également des ONG internationales qui exploitent la misère de Cité Soleil pour s’enrichir; ils gardent la Cité dans la misère, la saleté, pour justifier leur présence sur le terrain.
