  • Attorney Camille Leblanc discusses with Jean Dominique preparations for the Raboteau massacre trial, including whether the Raboteau trial can represent a coup d'état trial, as President René Préval has declared. This means identifying and judging not only the local perpetrators of the massacre, but also the national military leadership that ordered the massacre. They address the importance of a proper trial with evidence and documents (including testimony of forensic experts) and without specious arguments ("voye monte"), as well as the work of Justice and Peace and the Truth and Justice Commission in Gonaïves. Leblanc and Dominique also discuss broader problems with the justice system and challenges of justice reform under Minister of Justice Max Antoine, including the centralization of the justice system (so that people in the provinces do not have access), and judicial incompetence, negligence, and corruption (which means that even decent people find themselves in a rotten system).
