  • The National Archives of Haiti briefly came into the spotlight after nominee for Prime Minister Ericq Pierre was unable to produce his grandparents' birth certificates proving they were Haitian-born. The director of the National Archives, Wilfrid Bertrand, describes the many problems facing the institution, especially a lack of funds, the lack of a decent locale and the lack of archival personnel. Archives are an important part of national heritage and memory, so that the same mistakes aren't made again and again. He discusses the archives of various government ministries, including those from the Duvalier era, and the archives of the Forces Armées d'Haïti, which were in a deplorable condition when Bertrand retrieved them. He has not been able to retrieve the presidential archives of the Duvaliers, including the names of all those who died in Fort Dimanche. Bertrand discusses the possibility of decentralizing archives on a departmental level, and the importance of parliamentary archives. The lack of adequate space and the inaccessibility of archives has led to a lack of archival research by historians and others. Dominique asks if the neglect of the archives is representative of the carelessness of the elites from the moment of independence onward.
