  • Gérard Barthélemy speaks with Jean Dominique about rural Haitian society and the history of how Haiti's rural and urban worlds -- Bossale society versus Creole society -- became so divided, and how Haitian society came to be based upon the exclusion and exploitation of the country's rural majority. They discuss in particular the history of the Haitian army, and the role of the army in sowing divisions in society. According to Barthélemy, Haitian peasant society is fundamentally egalitarian and reciprocal, and it is only when Creole society imposes itself (in the form of chefs de section, speculators, and so on) that it becomes inegalitarian. Dominique brings up several counterexamples, including how Duvalier exploited existing class divisions in peasant society (such as the example of Zacharie Delva in the Artibonite). They also discuss the phenomenon of "mawonaj," and how participation and the end of exclusion can lead to the end of mawonaj. Barthélemy is the author of LE PAYS EN DEHORS, DANS LA SPLENDEUR D'UN APRÈS-MIDI D'HISTOIRE, and ÉTAT DE DROIT, DÉCENTRALISATION (with Gilles Danroc and Tony Cantave).

Ils discutent surtout de l’histoire de l’armée d’Haïti, du rôle joué par l’armée dans ces divisions sociales. D’après Barthélemy, la société paysanne haïtienne est fondamentalement égalitaire et ouverte au partage. Elle est devenue inégalitaire lorsque la société créole s’est imposée, avec les chefs de sections, les spéculateurs, etc.… Dominique cite plusieurs exceptions à cette définition, par exemple comment Duvalier a utilisé les divisions de classe dans la paysannerie (comme Zacharie Delva dans l’Artibonite). Discussion aussi sur le marronnage : c’est la participation, la fin de l’exclusion, qui peut amener la fin du marronnage. Barthélemy est l’auteur de « Le pays en dehors », « Dans la splendeur d’un après-midi d’histoire » et «  État de droit, décentralisation » avec Gilles Danroc et Tony Cantave.
