  • Eliphète St. Pierre of SAJ/Veye Yo and Venel Sanon of CHANDEL discuss the recent wave of insecurity and kidnappings, placing much of the responsibility on the Lavalas government. They discuss grassroots mobilization in Haiti (not necessarily for the person of Jean-Bertrand Aristide, but for the ideals he represented), about the violence and the legacy of the 1991-1994 coup years and the embargo, and the terms under which Aristide returned to power. They did not vote for the neoliberal agenda and a foreign occupation when they voted for Aristide, and many of the killers and coup leaders remain in powerful positions and receive kickbacks. Meanwhile, there has been little progress in terms of justice for victims of the coup nor for victims of Duvalierism. Corruption is rampant, in part because corruption is an endemic part of working within popular movements and in the government. The United States plays a huge role in imposing its agenda in Haiti, from orchestrating the coup d’état, to forcing Haiti to accept structural adjustment programs, to judicial reform and so-called “reconciliation” with the oppressors.

La corruption est partout, en partie parce qu'elle est une composante fondamentale du travail avec les gouvernements et les mouvements populaires. Les États-Unis jouent un rôle crucial dans cette dernière de par leurs stratégies pour imposer leur agenda à Haïti : l'orchestration du coup d'État, forcer Haïti à accepter des programmes d'ajustement structurel, la réforme judiciaire et la soit-disant « réconciliation » avec les oppresseurs.
