  • Michel Camdessus, director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), has just signed an agreement with the Haitian government. He defends the IMF's plan for Haiti. Jean Dominique begins the interview by asking, "I read in your biography that you were Catholic." ("Yes, that's true.") "You go to mass?" ("Indeed.") "How does a Catholic feel to be considered by some parts of the world to be Satan?" To this, Camdessus says that he is a scapegoat. Camdessus defends privatization (asking why he would recommend it if it were bad), and claims that the IMF's plan will not hurt domestic production, will stabilize the Haitian gourde, and will be good for democracy. Listeners call in to ask questions -- for example, does the IMF have good intentions for Haiti?
