  • Jean Dominique interviews Jean-Robert Martinez, senator of the Sud-Est, about how he would describe the state of the country two months after the inauguration of President René Préval. Martinez describes Haiti as generally in a state of crisis, but great political strides have been made since the coup d'état, namely the return of democratic order with President Aristide and the recent election of President Préval. He discusses the effects of decentralization for the territorial collectivities. Martinez states the social problems Haiti is facing such as overpopulation in cities, diminished wages, unemployment, environmental degradation, and others, are the inevitable results of political crisis. They discuss the role of foreign intervention and privatization in Haiti's development. They discuss the pervasiveness of non-governmental organizations.
