  • Father William Smarth discusses with Jean Dominique Haiti's poverty and underdevelopment and the responsibility of the Lavalas party (now under President René Préval and Prime Minister Rosny Smarth, who is coincidentally William Smarth's brother) to bring about social change. He describes the role of liberation theology priests like himself in helping the Haitian people build democratic institutions. They address the meaning of Préval's declaration that Haiti must "restore the authority of the state." They also discuss the question of true democratic participation and social inclusion of the Haitian majority, including linguistic inclusion. In the face of collective bovarism and snobbery, Smarth emphasizes the importance of speaking Creole when speaking to the Haitian people. Smarth describes how Jesus Christ, who took the side of the poorest of the poor, provides a liberational example, while Dominique asks him about the future of liberation theology, after the fall of the USSR and in the face of opposition from Pope John Paul II and the Catholic Church hierarchy. They end by discussing corruption and the problem of "moun pa" (patronage, cronyism).

Pour finir, ils parlent de la corruption et du clientélisme.
