  • Lakhdar Brahimi, UN special envoy to Haiti, assesses the situation in Haiti on the eve of his departure. Brahimi and Jean Dominique discuss disarmament, the question of whether coup leaders might try to regain power in Haiti, the changing post Cold War world order, US intervention in Haiti in general and the role of the CIA in particular. Brahimi and Dominique also discuss the transfer of power from Aristide to Préval, conflict between social classes in Haiti, and the processes undertaken by several Latin American countries to emerge from dictatorship. On the latter point, they analyze the role of the press in these processes of democratization. Brahimi cautions against disorder resulting from newfound liberty -- his great fear for Haiti is insecurity and the irresponsibility of organisations populaires. They end by discussing international support for Haiti -- much of that aid comes with strings attached, such as privatization -- the UN security council's negotiations over the possible renewal of MINUHA's mandate, and the capacity of the Haitian police.

Brahimi et Dominique parlent du transfert de pouvoir Aristide-Préval, du conflit de classes en Haïti, du processus vécu par plusieurs pays d’Amérique Latine pour sortir de la dictature.
